A German court has sentenced a 101-year-old former Nazi concentration camp guard to five-years jail for Holocaust mass murders.
He’s the oldest former Nazi to be charged with war crimes.
Prosecutors accused the Lithuanian-born Josef Schuetz of being an accessory to the murders of 3518 mostly Jewish prisoners at the Sachsenhausen camp near Berlin
He denied the allegations, claiming he was working as a farm labourer in a different country area at the time.
The court found documentation that proved he had worked as a guard at the camp from 1942 to 1945 and had willingly supported the murders.
His lawyer vowed to appeal the guilty verdict even though his wheelchair-bound client is unlikely to serve prison time because of ill health.
The world’s leading Nazi-hunter Dr Efraim Zuroff from the ‘Simon Wiesenthal Center’ says it’s never too late for justice.
He proclaimed old age should not offer protection to people who committed such heinous crimes.
Dr Zuroff is still hunting dozens of suspected Nazi war criminals who are believed to be alive and told the Jewish Chronicle he will not rest while a single one still “draws breath”.
In another high-profile case, 97-year-old Irmgard Furchner who went on the run before her trial last year, is still awaiting sentencing.
