The Pope and the Holocaust: Vatican to open files

The Vatican has announced it will open the archives of Pius XII, who was Pope during the Second World War, to researchers from next year.

There have been calls to open the archives for decades amidst allegations that Pius XII was “Hitler’s Pope”, who failed to denounce the Holocaust.

Supporters of the former Pope say his silence enabled the secret rescue of Jews.
